A Study of a Bistable Reciprocating Piston Pump Driven by Shape Memory Alloys and Recuperative Springs

This paper presents and examines a new design concept for bistable reciprocating piston pump. The pump mechanism belongs to the mechanisms, which have two stable positions at end of suction discharge strokes. transition between is achieved by using triggering force each beginning subsequent movement recuperative spring. In this mechanism, forces are created Shape Memory Alloy (SMA) wires. Geometric expressions strokes derived. Additional equations obtained balance moments equilibrium unstable position in middle stroke. Numerical studies been conducted strokes, considering exerted gas on piston, modelled an indicator diagram assuming polytropic process. It was found that load has significant non-uniformity. diagrams illustrating distribution total showed cold SMA wire shifted point instability. numerical example shows how choose right spring stiffness obtain energy recovery. way, act only and, after that, substitute action forces. theoretical relationships methods presented here suitable synthesizing pumps or analyzing similar mechanisms.
